Network Resilience – Ensuring a correct fit.

by: David Palmer

Dependency on the network is growing.  As businesses move to Cloud Computing, VoIP solutions and distributed workforces, it is more important than ever to ensure the network is fit for purpose. Reliance on a web connection or link to data centres where business services are hosted is becoming critical. When core business services are hosted in the cloud it becomes vital that connections to the workforce are maintained or productivity suffers.  Also, running voice across the network makes commercial sense but only if the network has sufficient resilience built in.

Having resilient connectivity is important to businesses so they can continue to operate in some form during a network issue.  However, choosing the right level of resilience can be difficult. I would always recommend resilient services for the network to ensure the business continues to function in some form in the case of an outage. The level of resilience required always depends on the business; can it afford to function on a basic service where only emails get through, or does it need to continue as normal? In short, the level of resilience implemented needs to match the minimum level of functionality required during a network issue.  If the business must continue as normal at all times, then the backup solution needs to match the primary solution.

We have seen growth in the demand for high performance, intelligent connectivity services, driven by new business technologies and working practises. We are seeing more and more services traverse the network, bandwidth requirements continue to rise and uptime become ever more critical to the business.  To support theses increasing demands on the network, I have recently been involved in the development of Star's Ethernet Resilience Services which offer high performance resilient connectivity for mission critical applications.  As such we have given our customers extra confidence in the network and to embrace the new technologies that will underpin their future prosperity.
