Are you getting enough Fibre?

by: David Palmer

Over the last few months as we have been working towards the launch of Fibre Broadband, I have descended into the realms of super-geek. I have found myself becoming a 'cabinet spotter'! This started with my own cabinet and waiting in anticipation for it to come online, but this worrying habit has quickly developed into looking out for friends' and family's cabinets. I have even been advising them what to look for, to see if they are going to get Fibre broadband anytime soon. Everyone seems to be asking 'when am I getting fibre?

At Star, we have been trialling Fibre Broadband for a few months now and the results look impressive with most beta customers achieving more than 30Mbps download speeds. This is great news as our customers look to this latest of connectivity technologies to help them increase their productivity and make efficiency gains.  By offering Fibre Broadband as part of our MPLS services, customers can also now deliver centralised applications, voice and video cost-effectively over a secure private cloud.

Since starting this blog I have actually had my fibre broadband circuit installed and already I've noticed everyday applications such as web, Outlook and thin client are so much faster. Now that download bandwidth has gone from 2Mbps to a steady 40Mbps I feel like I'm working in the office even when I'm at home.

So in answer to my question - Yes, I definitely am getting enough fibre and I recommend you do too.

  1. Interesting. But of course, if it's not fibre to the home then it's not fibre optic broadband. VDSL using copper is not the way ahead.
  2. We can't wait to get fibre broadband, whether it is fibre all the way to our office, or just to the cabinet we are deperate for faster access. I'm not sure Neil Fairbrother understands the cost difference between the two.
