I am sometimes asked whether SME's are "waking up" to the benefits of cloud computing.  I see it the other way around; that they have been searching for answers to everyday business problems for many years, and the ways of accessing new technologies to help them solve these challenges has been developing.  This is an important distinction to make – the technology industry is now providing businesses with new ways of solving their issues.  Most of the SMEs I speak to will agree that IT services make a great deal of good business sense when they include better agility and scalability, lower management overhead and future proofing. However, the most powerful benefit is commercial; giving UK businesses the ability to access their applications anytime and from anywhere, and pay for it as they use it. The discussion soon becomes one of sound business acumen as opposed to technology.
