The number one concern that prevents companies from moving services and data into the cloud is security. While the commercial benefits may be compelling for many businesses, the thought of relying on a third party to secure networks, applications and data is leap of faith they are unwilling to take. However, for many businesses, particularly in the mid-market, moving to a Private Cloud will improve data security. For small and medium sized businesses, the resource or capability to deploy and maintain secure systems simply doesn't exist in-house.
As security is such a major concern for their customers, cloud service providers must continuously maintain high levels of security that even large enterprises would be hard pressed to match. Just one security breach could destroy a provider's credibility and ultimately its entire business – for good. So they (or the good ones at least) deliver their services from ISO 270001 certified data centres, regularly vet their staff, maintain high levels of access control and auditing, maintain staff IT security skills, deploy the latest technology to meet current and probable future threats and proactively monitor services 24/7/365. How many mid-market companies can claim to do the same? The right cloud providers will secure a company's assets more effectively than the traditional DIY approach but ultimately engaging a cloud provider is an issue of trust. Selecting a local, yet proficient provider, with local data centres and staff interested in working with you to meet your business requirements will help build trust and allow the full benefits of Private Cloud solutions to be realised.
