Recently, I have had a few cold and frosty starts to the day. While these mornings have their charms, it does remind me that winter is coming. I hate struggling through snow on my way to work, and last year it seemed to go on and on. It also cost UK businesses over £7 billion (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/8569822.stm ).
I sometimes think that these days are all about disaster recovery. In effect the doors of the office are shut to nearly everyone but the Nordic skiers. So the organisation’s DR plan could be swung into force. However, if the company already has flexible and remote working policies in place, it is really enhancing business continuity.
At Star we are a fairly mobile and flexible work force. There are very few of us who cannot work from any office, or from home. There are a few reasons why we can do this
- SSL VPN allows access to internal systems from any internet facing connection
- Good broadband connection
- Star empowers us to work from where we are most effective
- There is remote access to our phone system that allows us to set diverts from anywhere
- I can IM colleagues, share my screen and set up audio and video conferences with other staff
Even though I am not looking forward to the snowy days, I am sure that come the bad weather this year Star will be able to keep working.
